Knowing when to move on
Do you know when it's time to move on?
Recently, I made the difficult decision to leave John Truby’s Writers Room. I've been studying with him these last two years.
Don't worry, my decision had nothing to do with the quality of the class or the amazing community of writers there. John Truby’s classes are fantastic, and I highly recommend them to anyone looking to deepen their understanding of storytelling. The insights I gained have been invaluable to my growth as a writer and a coach. But it was time to make some hard decisions about my time, energy, and prioritizing projects.
While I could have stayed in John's group forever, that wouldn’t have been beneficial either.
Knowing when it’s time to move on, even from something that is still working well can be both empowering and challenging.
We need to keep growing and developing.
Sometimes, a teacher doesn’t have to be with you for your entire journey. You can step in, learn what you need to learn, and then step out when it’s time to apply that knowledge independently.
I often share this with my clients: learn what you need from who you can (including me), and then move on.
Several of my clients who are finishing up their work with me this month. While I'm always sad to see them go, I'm excited for them to move forward on their writing journeys.
As writers, we grow and evolve. Sometimes, this means we outgrow our teachers or need to learn something new from someone else. It’s important to recognize when you’ve reached that point and take the next step.
I encourage you all to reflect on your own learning journeys.
Are there classes, workshops, or even stories that you’ve outgrown? Are you holding on to something because it’s comfortable and familiar, even though it might be time to move on?
Embrace the change. Trust that you have what you need to take the next step, and be open to new learning opportunities that will come your way.
Remember, the goal is not just to accumulate knowledge but to apply it effectively and continue evolving as writers. Let go and move forward.
Keep going, and trust your journey.
